Gorbachev, Ted Turner, and Jane Goodall at the United Nations – Global Security Conference
OVERVIEW
At United Nations Headquarters in New York, the Global Security Institute convened Mikhail Gorbachev, Ted Turner, Jane Goodall, former Canadian Prime Minister Kim Campbell, Jonathan Granoff, and other leaders for a high‑level conference on nuclear disarmament and global security. In his first public appearance at the UN since his historic 1988 General Assembly address, Gorbachev joined major philanthropists and civil‑society voices on the same stage to argue for a safer, more cooperative world. Michael William Paul served as the official photographer for the event, creating a visual record that spans formal addresses, portraits, and quieter exchanges among a generation of leaders now largely gone.
INITIATIVES
Brought together Gorbachev, Turner, Goodall, Campbell, Granoff, and other diplomats and experts to address nuclear disarmament, cooperative security, and the responsibilities of global leadership.
Created a photographic archive at UN Headquarters, including podium moments, working sessions, and portraits that preserve the atmosphere and human dynamics of the conference.
Helped lay groundwork for ongoing peace and development work with the Global Security Institute and related partners, later informing Models for Peace and other initiatives focused on disarmament and conflict prevention.
